Lawn Fawn: Hedgehog Autumn Birthday Wishes Card

Hedgehog Fall Birthday Wishes card by Maria Byrd, 082017 | CraftsyByrd.blogspot.com

A week ago, I received my Ranger Distress Oxide Ink pads but didn't get to play with them until now... The first few tries using the product were unsuccessful.  Sometimes, the more you force things, the worse it gets.  So, I changed my direction with the card design and how I was using the ink.  As soon as I did, everything seemed to just fall into place and I ended up creating this cute Birthday card for Autumn using Lawn Fawn stamps/dies and some fussy cutting.  I just love the hedgehog bouncing on a pile of autumn leaves and that glossy "happy"!

playing with Ranger Distress Oxide
I was excited to play with the Distress Oxide and quickly found out that it was fun to use and as messy as Distress Inks (note to self:  wear old shirts!).  Also, that I wasn't too keen about its charcoal look (red/yellow/blue card).  So, I tried an acrylic sealer and Micro Glaze (applied on orange card) as a top layer.  The acrylic sealer had a shinier finish (no photo), but both deepened the colors and reduced the charcoal finish.

I really liked the "happy" in yellow-orange and that adorable hedgehog!  However, the first card at above photo was a failed attempt. Memento Ink (good for alcohol-based markers) used to stamp "sending warm" sentiment smudged. Versafine Ink worked much better for stamping "birthday" sentiment.  The embossing ink in white stood out too much ("wish" sentiment) so had to consider either black or copper tones.  Also, the sentiment needed to be reworded a bit.

Keeping in mind what I learned, I started a new card as soon as I woke up on Sunday.  The inspiration to mix different sentiments came from Lawn Fawnatics' Challenge 10 for August 2017.  The idea was to combine different stamps and/or dies to create a Custom Sentiment.  Here's the list of where I got each element from:
1.  Lawn Fawn, Merry Messages - "Sending Warm" and "Wishes" sentiments
2.  Lawn Cuts, Scripty Happy - "Happy" die cut
3. Lawn Fawn, Jump For Joy - leaves and hedgehog images, "For" (cut from "for your kindness" strip) and "Your Birthday" sentiments

To create the card front, I die-cut Neenah 80 lb. white cardstock with Lawn Cuts Fancy Scalloped Rectangle Stackables.  Then a piece of Canson XL watercolor paper was colored with Distress Oxides in Spiced Marmalade, Fixed Brick, and Fossilized Amber.  "Happy" sentiment was cut from it but it was a bit flimsy.  So, 2 more were die-cut from a cardstock and then all 3 pieces were glued together.  It was then attached to the card with thin strips of double-sided foam tape.  To add dimension, Glossy Accents was carefully spread on the letters with the help of a weeder tool.  A few leaves were stamped on the back of the colored paper and fussy cut.

"Sending Warm" was heat-embossed in Copper.  "Wishes..." was stamped in Versafine Onyx Black.  Hedgehog was colored with Zig Clean Color Real Brush in dark brown, brown, beige, and flesh (I only have the set of 24 colors).  A square foam tape was used to raise it as well as a few pieces of the leaves.  Edge of the card was daubed with Fossilized Amber.  All pieces colored with Distress Oxide were rubbed with Micro Glaze.  The finished card front was then adhered to an A2 (4.25 x 5.5 inches when folded) size Kraft Cardstock.

I would like to enter this card to the following challenges:
